Gyan Mudra
The Gyan mudra represents the starting place or home. It takes you back to your roots, or a simpler time. It clears the mental facilities, stimulates the root chakra, and grounds calms and improves concentration. A yogic tranquilizer, its practice ensures mental peace. This mudra can be incorporated into any number of poses or used as a meditation on its own. The hand position for this mudra is to place the tips of the thumb and index finger together, other fingers are straight but relaxed.
These days altogether too busy, running in three directions at once I seem unable to accomplish anything. It's time to slow down, take ujay breath and do a little mudra therapy.
Jai Bhagwan and peace to you all.

Several (many?) years ago Yoga Journal published a whole article about different mudras and their purpose/power. I have been flipping thru all my back issues and have yet to find it.
Keep the mudra discussion coming, cuz I love how just a subtle change of finger position affects a whole pose. It's such a good reminder of how interconnected the whole organism is...
The latest issue of Yoga Journal (August 2008) has a feature about different mudras, written by Kelly McGonigal.
